Tunis:United Nations UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a call for the cessation of expanding conflicts and emphasized the need for stronger civilian protection. He highlighted the far-reaching economic impacts that wars are imposing beyond their immediate battlefields.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Guterres compared the current state of global conflicts to El Nino, describing it as a disturbance that causes widespread disruption. He noted that conflicts are not only intensifying but also interlinking, with their repercussions spreading rapidly across the globe.
Guterres stressed that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are illegal under international law and should cease immediately. He pointed out that the ramifications of war extend beyond physical battle zones, affecting energy markets, shipping lanes, supply chains, and financial systems.
The UN chief warned that these disruptions are exacerbating existing global inequalities, where some populations can manage rising costs while others are forced into difficult choices between necessities such as food and heating. He also highlighted the dilemma faced by poorer countries, which must balance servicing debts against investing in essential services like health and education.
Guterres called for an end to hostilities, particularly in the Middle East, and urged adherence to international law, protection of civilians, and preservation of freedom of navigation. He emphasized the importance of allowing diplomacy to take the forefront in achieving peace.
Ahead of his scheduled visit to Egypt, Guterres reiterated his plea for peace, stating the global desire for security, dignity, and effective governance. He urged international institutions and governments to meet these expectations.
