Geneva:A Cambodian diplomat has rejected statements made by Thailand at a United Nations meeting, asserting that Cambodia neither initiated the recent border conflict nor escalated hostilities.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Ke Sovann, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Cambodia to the United Nations Office at Geneva, responded to Thai Permanent Representative Benjamin Sukanjanajtee during a UNHCR Executive Committee session. He emphasized that the Thai claims are false and misleading.
Ambassador Ke Sovann clarified that the conflict began when Thai troops fired on a Cambodian military position on May 28, 2025, killing a Cambodian soldier. This incident led to increased tensions between the two nations.
The Cambodian envoy highlighted that Cambodian citizens were displaced within their own country due to attacks from Thai forces. He noted that the final repatriation of Cambodian refugees from Thailand occurred in 1999.
He recalled the international boundary agreements recognized under the 1904 Convention and the 1907 Treaty, stressing the obligation of both countries to respect these borders.
Regarding landmine allegations, Ke Sovann stated that Cambodia has not deployed new landmines, attributing recent incidents to remnants from past conflicts. He reaffirmed Cambodia's commitment to the Ottawa Convention.
The Ambassador reiterated that a joint statement from December 2025 does not legitimize any Thai occupation or destruction in Cambodian territory. He urged Thailand to cease unlawful actions and facilitate the return of displaced Cambodians.
