CHRC Urges UN to Address Thailand’s Military Actions in Cambodia

Phnom penh: The Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC) has officially submitted an urgent appeal to United Nations Human Rights Mechanisms over the grave violations of the right to adequate housing and right to own property resulting from Thailand's military invasion, pillaging, and destruction of civilian homes in Cambodia.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the appeal was sent separately on Jan. 5 to H.E. Volker Trk, High Commissioner of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and Mr. Balakrishnan Rajagopal, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing. In this urgent appeal, the CHRC called upon the United Nations Human Rights Mechanisms to address several key issues, including the examination and cessation of Thailand's violations, engagement with relevant UN mechanisms, and urging Thailand to withdraw its forces and ensure the safe return of displaced civilians.

The CHRC emphasized that the right to adequate housing is a fundamental human right and should not be a target of military actions. The organization stressed that the destruction of civilian homes and forced evictions are serious human rights violations requiring immediate international intervention.

The CHRC stated that the lack of timely international response is worsening the humanitarian situation and undermining international law. They highlighted that silence in the face of such aggression allows impunity and erodes international peace, security, and order. The committee called for the international community to take firm measures to protect Cambodian civilians and hold Thailand accountable under international law.

Credible information from national authorities, foreign journalists, and displaced civilians indicates that despite a ceasefire agreement on Dec. 27, 2025, Thai armed forces have continued illegal operations in Cambodian villages. These actions include the pillaging of property, land seizures, and demolition of civilian housing in various provinces, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
