Thailand: Thailand may close the border and build a fence along the border for as long as it wishes, provided that no construction takes place within Cambodian territory, said Acting Head of State Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen. Speaking during a visit to displaced families in Svay Chek district, Banteay Meanchey province, on Tuesday morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen stated that the decision to close or reopen the border belongs to Thailand.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Hun Sen emphasized that Thailand's decision on border closure could extend to centuries if desired, as long as Cambodian territory is not violated. He addressed the issue of smuggling Thai goods into Cambodia, warning that those caught could face asset confiscation, with proceeds potentially used for infrastructure development along the border.
He further highlighted that Cambodia imports over US$10 billion worth of Thai goods annually and suggested that Thai products could remain for domestic use within Thailand. Hun Sen encouraged strengthening Cambodia's domestic production and supply capacity while considering alternative imports from regional partners like Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore if shortages occur.
Hun Sen asserted that reclaiming Cambodian land should be pursued through peaceful mechanisms and international law for mutual benefit. He warned against military action, stating it would undermine Cambodia's political and diplomatic efforts. Hun Sen concluded by noting that international opinion is increasingly in favor of Cambodia, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peaceful relations with neighboring countries.
