Authorities Intensify Preparations for Khmer New Year Festivities

Phnom penh: As the traditional Khmer New Year approaches, capital and provincial administrations across Cambodia are stepping up preparations to enhance public spaces with flowers, colourful lights, and festive decorations, creating a joyful atmosphere for citizens.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, in Phnom Penh, from the Independence Monument to Preah Norodom Boulevard and the Wat Phnom Historical Site, as well as other key areas, working teams are actively installing decorative light poles, trimming trees, and planting vibrant flowers to beautify the capital both day and night.

At public parks near Wat Phnom, preparations for the 'Nokor Sankranta' event are well underway. A nearly four-metre-tall golden horse statue made of bamboo - symbolising the Year of the Horse - has been erected in front of the iconic Wat Phnom clock, alongside various other decorative displays.

Along major roads, colourful lights shaped like flowers and the Cambodian flag have been installed and will illuminate the streets in vibrant colours at night.

In addition to these decorations, the Phnom Penh Capital Administration has displayed banners and slogans conveying festive greetings and messages, including 'Happy New Year.'

Residents have also contributed to the festive spirit by decorating their homes with hanging tassels and star-shaped ornaments in various colours, reflecting traditional customs.

At pagodas, committees have prepared the compounds with decorations to welcome Buddhist followers participating in religious and cultural activities during the holiday.

According to capital and provincial officials, these preparations aim not only to enhance the visual appeal of public spaces but also to promote national pride, encourage community participation, and provide opportunities for people to celebrate and create lasting memories.

Authorities have also called on citizens to help maintain environmental cleanliness by avoiding littering in public areas, in order to preserve the beauty and value of Phnom Penh and other provinces during this festive occasion.

Cambodian people are going to celebrate their traditional New Year from April 14 to 16, while the 'Nokor Sankranta' will take place from April 14 to 19.
