New york: The Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for an additional year, continuing until June 17, 2027. This decision highlights the ongoing commitment of the international community to support Afghanistan during a crucial period.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Resolution 2822 calls for the UN secretary-general to carry out a strategic review of UNAMA. The findings of this review are to be presented in a written report to the council by March 31, 2027. The review is intended to enhance the mission's mandate implementation, improve coherence, eliminate redundancy, and strengthen coordination across UN operations in Afghanistan.
Furthermore, the resolution mandates that the UN chief provide quarterly updates to the Security Council on the situation in Afghanistan and the progress of UNAMA's mandate. This requirement ensures continuous monitoring and assessment of the mission's effectiveness and the evolving conditions on the ground.
