Tunis:United Nations UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged for an end to the escalation of global conflicts and emphasized the need for enhanced protection of civilians, highlighting the extensive economic impacts of wars beyond the battlefield.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Guterres explained that conflicts are not only intensifying but also expanding in a manner similar to the El Nino weather phenomenon, which disrupts lives across vast distances. He warned that wars are interlinked, creating a ripple effect with far-reaching consequences.
Guterres stressed that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are banned under international law and must cease. He pointed out that the impact of conflicts extends beyond battle zones, affecting energy markets, shipping lanes, supply chains, and financial systems. These disruptions are particularly severe in a world marked by inequality, where some individuals can manage rising costs while others struggle with basic needs like food and heating. Additionally, poorer nations face the dilemma of balancing debt servicing with investments in health and education.
He called for an end to hostilities, including those in the Middle East, and advocated for adherence to international law, civilian protection, and freedom of navigation, while emphasizing the importance of giving diplomacy a chance. As he prepared for a visit to Egypt, Guterres reiterated the urgent need for peace, stating that people worldwide desire security, dignity, and effective governance from both national and international bodies.
