TOLERANCE KEY TO AVOIDING CONFLICTS IN MULTIRACIAL COMMUNITY

The spirit of tolerance must take precedence in a multi-racial society to prevent conflicts although the Federal Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, said Kelantan state development office director Jasri Kasim.

He said the people should practise mutual respect and avoid raising sensitive matters concerning the royal institution, race, religion and culture.

"Recently, we have observed that unity among us has become more fragile due to various factors, including differing political beliefs and information explosion on social media.

"We need to find a way or an idea to defuse this situation.

“This includes educating the community to adhere to a code of conduct and practise tolerance so that the unity achieved so far can be preserved," he said when launching the state-level National Month and Fly Jalur Gemilang campaign here today.

The programme is aimed at spreading the message of unity and nationhood through the Fly Jalur Gemilang campaign nationwide.
