Paris: Cambodian Minister of Culture and Fine Arts and President of the Cambodian National Commission for UNESCO, H.E. Dr. Phoeurng Sackona, met with UNESCO Director-General H.E. Khaled El-Enany to strengthen cooperation on cultural heritage preservation. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the 11th General Assembly of the States Parties to the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Dr. Phoeurng Sackona led the Cambodian delegation in reaffirming Cambodia's commitment to working closely with UNESCO. The minister expressed the Royal Government's determination to protect, preserve, and promote Cambodia's cultural heritage. The discussions were held at UNESCO Headquarters on June 17-18, focusing on both tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
During the meeting, UNESCO Director-General highlighted the organization's dedication to promoting culture and cultural heritage, emphasizing its role as a means for dialogue, understanding, and peacebuilding amidst global conflicts and tensions. Discussions centered on the implementation of obligations under the 2003 Convention, with a particular focus on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.
The meeting also included exchanges on preparations to mark the 75th anniversary of Cambodia's membership in UNESCO. Additionally, plans were discussed for the Director-General's future visit to Cambodia during the Francophonie Summit in November 2026. The visit is anticipated to underscore the achievements of Cambodia-UNESCO cooperation over the past seven decades.
