This year’s Khmer New Year holiday ended last weekend with joyfulness thanks to six key factors, said Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.
At the inauguration ceremony of the phase IV of Phnom Penh flood protection and drainage improvement project this morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said peace, infrastructure connectivity, increasing means of transportation, stable GDP per capita, rise of newly established tourism destinations, and herd immunity against COVID-19 are the main drivers of the success of the Khmer New Year celebrations from April 14-16, 2022.
According to the statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia registered more than 5.17 million national and international tourists during the three days of Khmer New Year and a day after (Sunday).
The most visited destination was Battambang province, followed by Kampong Cham, Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap, Prey Veng, Kampong Speu, Pursat, Kampong Chhnang, Kampot and Preah Sihanouk provinces, and Phnom Penh capital.
H.E. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism, said that this number of tourists is higher than expected and this is the highest number since the Royal Government announced the closure of COVID-19 community outbreak (Feb. 20 Event) in December 2021.
The Universal New Year day attracted some 2 million tourists and the Chinese New Year in early February about 940,000 tourists.
