Samdech Techo Hun Sen Stresses Resilience and Unity as Cambodia Celebrates New Year

Phnom penh: Acting Head of State, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, has defended the organisation of Khmer New Year celebrations, stressing that localised challenges should not disrupt nationwide social and economic activities. According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Samdech Techo underscored that 'an injury to one finger should not cripple the whole body,' emphasising that difficulties along the Cambodia-Thailand border should not halt the daily lives of the broader population. He acknowledged ongoing challenges affecting armed forces stationed at the border and some displaced citizens, noting that support has been provided to ensure they can still observe the New Year. However, he questioned whether it would be appropriate to suspend economic and social activities for the country's more than 17 million people, including closing markets, banks, factories, farms, and schools. Samdech Techo also rejected criticism from opposition groups regarding the organisation of the Nokor Sankranta event, arguing that such views risk undermining national morale and economic activity. He stated that public celebrations across the country demonstrate resilience and unity, rather than disregard for those facing difficulties. Encouraging inclusivity, he invited critics both inside and outside the country to join in the New Year festivities, calling for a spirit of togetherness during the national holiday.
