Phnom penh: Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen on Tuesday shared an unofficial Khmer translation of an article by Thai international relations and security expert Surachart Bamrungsuk, saying he wanted people in both Cambodia and Thailand to better understand the author's perspective.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Samdech Techo expressed interest in an article by Surachart Bamrungsuk titled 'The Paradox: War Has Also Strengthened Cambodia's Ruling Regime.' He emphasized that he was sharing only an unofficial translation without adding personal commentary, allowing people from both countries to assess the views expressed.

The article posited that wars have historically strengthened governments, citing examples from Ukraine and Iran. The author argued that the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict similarly reinforced Cambodia's leadership, contrary to expectations that military force would destabilize it.

The article further contended that the conflict did not yield strategic advantages for Thailand but rather produced outcomes contrary to those anticipating that military actions, particularly air strikes, could lead to the collapse of Cambodia's government.

Bamrungsuk suggested that Thailand needs a stronger diplomatic strategy to avoid military reliance. He noted that Thailand's diplomacy often appears to follow Cambodia's lead, with Bangkok frequently reacting to Cambodia's international initiatives and staying on the defensive in the information sphere.

The assessment was not intended to claim Cambodia's superiority over Thailand but to offer an alternative perspective, warning against excessive support for military solutions that could result in strategic miscalculations and fail to achieve intended goals.

The article concluded by suggesting that a genuine solution to the Cambodia issue is necessary, acknowledging Cambodia's enhanced capacity for international engagement. The author described Thai Prime Minister Anutin's proposal to end the conflict as a significant challenge, asserting that Thailand could not sustain its current position indefinitely.
