Botum sakor: The country's first-ever LNG-fired power plant, boasting an energy capacity of 900 MW, is on track to commence operations in its first phase by the end of 2026, with the second phase expected to be operational in 2027.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the latest developments were shared during an inspection visit on January 5 by H.E. Keo Rottanak, Minister of Mines and Energy, to the construction site located in Botum Sakor district, Koh Kong province. H.E. Rottanak highlighted the plant's significance in providing additional electricity, reinforcing national energy security, and enhancing the stability of Cambodia's electricity grid.
With an investment of approximately US$1.35 billion, this project marks Cambodia's inaugural foray into natural gas-fired power generation, spearheaded by the local company Royal Group. H.E. Minister emphasized Cambodia's ambitions to increase the share of renewable energy to at least 70 percent by 2030, a strategic move aimed at bolstering both environmental sustainability and economic growth, while prioritizing energy efficiency.
