Ex-presidential policy chief appears for questioning over alleged data fabrication

SEOUL, Prosecutors questioned former presidential chief of staff for policy Kim Su-hyun on Monday over allegations of economic data manipulation during the previous Moon Jae-in government. The Daejeon District Prosecutors Office brought in Kim for questioning on charges of abuse of authority and violations of the Statistics Act, according to officials. Kim served as a senior presidential secretary for social affairs under the Moon government before embarking on the role of presidential policy chief. The Board of Audit and Inspection earlier announced its findings that Moon's presidential office and the land ministry exerted undue pressure on agencies responsible for statistics, compelling them to manipulate official data on income, employment and housing prices from 2017 to 2021, allegedly in support of its key economic and real estate policies. The state audit agency accuses Kim of leaking the land ministry data on the fluctuation rate of housing prices to the Blue House before it was made public, follow ing orders from another former presidential policy chief, Jang Ha-sung. Kim is the latest of a series of senior Moon administration officials questioned over the scandal, including Jang, former chief presidential secretaries for policy Kim Sang-jo and Lee Ho-seung, and former Land Minister Kim Hyun-mi.
