DP’s floor leader calls for investigation into first lady’s luxury bag allegations

The prosecution should launch an investigation into allegations first lady Kim Keon Hee inappropriately received a luxury bag as a gift in 2022, the floor leader of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) said Thursday. Rep. Hong Ihk-pyo made the remarks after reports that President Yoon Suk Yeol is considering explaining his stance regarding the allegations, possibly in a televised interview format, as early as this month. "The matter regarding the luxury bag should not end with an apology. Let me be clear, this is a matter that the prosecution should conduct an investigation into," Hong said at a policy coordination meeting of the party. Kim came under fire after video footage was released in November of her receiving a Christian Dior bag, valued at around 3 million won (US$2,200), from a Korean American pastor in September 2022. The pastor secretly filmed her taking the bag with a camera hidden in his watch. Dubbed the "Dior bag scandal" by local media, the scandal has caused an unexpected feud betw een Yoon and ruling People Power Party (PPP) leader Han Dong-hoon, Yoon's closest confidant, over how to respond to the allegations. Yoon and Han appeared to have patched up the rupture after they met at the site of a market fire in the central county of Seocheon on Tuesday. Source: Yonhap News Agency
