The fight against fake news is a global trend that states around the world have been paying close attention to.
The remarks were made by H.E. Khieu Kanharith, Cambodian Minister of Information, at a Workshop on Combating Fake News for Journalists (Phase 2) in Sihanoukville, Preah Sihanouk province this morning.
Representatives of foreign embassies in Cambodia, chairman of National Secretariat of Cambodia for Mekong-Lancang Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, representative of Preah Sihanouk provincial administration, senior officials of the Ministry of Information, directors of municipal and provincial Information Departments, national and international journalists were present on the occasion.
H.E. Minister also raised global and regional as well as Cambodian mechanisms to combat fake news, and laid stress on the significance of participation of all parties, including the citizens, for the effective prevention of this issue.
For his part, H.E. Phos Sovann, Director General of Information and Broadcasting at the Ministry of Information emphasised the negative impact of fake news on society and the nation as a whole. It can create chaos in community and society by inciting to racial discrimination, creating loss of trust in public institutions, stealing people's personal data, and undermining security and public order, etc.
It is necessary to have barriers to prevent fake news, he said, adding that those barriers can be professional ethics in journalism, tools or techniques of information verification, regulatory measures governing media environment, contribution to the dissemination of true information, and so on.
