Phnom penh: Cambodian Minister of Information H.E. Neth Pheaktra praised the nation's delegation for its efforts in safeguarding national interests through peaceful and lawful means following the initial conciliation proceedings over maritime boundary disputes with Thailand.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the three-day session took place in Singapore from September 14 to 16, marking the first meeting of the Conciliation Commission under Article 298 and Annex V of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Minister H.E. Neth Pheaktra lauded the delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Prak Sokhonn, who acted as Cambodia's chief agent in the proceedings. The minister acknowledged the delegation's commitment to diplomacy, adherence to legal frameworks, and engagement in constructive dialogue.

H.E. Neth Pheaktra emphasized that Cambodia's participation in the conciliation process should be viewed not as an escalation but as a deliberate choice to utilize peaceful dispute-settlement mechanisms provided by international law. He highlighted that opting for structured UNCLOS proceedings over confrontation is consistent with Cambodia's long-standing foreign policy of seeking peaceful resolutions with neighboring countries.

Looking forward, the minister pointed out that the success of the process will depend on good faith, concrete actions, and adherence to agreed framework measures by both parties. He noted that while the first meeting has concluded, the conciliation process is only beginning. He encouraged patience and a continued commitment to international law as negotiations proceed, expressing hope for a lasting and peaceful resolution advantageous to both nations.
