Banteay Meanchey:Mine clearance operations in Cambodia are being emphasized alongside risk prevention education to ensure the safety of the public, particularly children in high-risk zones, according to senior Cambodian official H.E. Dr. Ly Thuch.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Dr. Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), made these comments during a mine risk awareness campaign in O'Sampor commune, Malai district. He expressed concern over unexploded ordnance (UXO) threats, citing cluster munitions left by Thai military incursions in 2025 as ongoing dangers to residents in border areas.
Dr. Ly Thuch highlighted that demining alone cannot ensure public safety. He stressed the importance of early warning systems, preventive education, and cooperation between local authorities and communities. He warned against the false sense of security in cleared zones and emphasized the need for accurate information and danger sign recognition to prevent casualties.
In response to these challenges, Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has directed authorities to expedite the identification and clearance of explosive remnants to protect communities from both legacy and new threats.
Dr. Ly Thuch called on mine action operators to expand outreach programs for students and local residents. He praised the swift response of Banteay Meanchey provincial administration in assisting displaced populations and mitigating risks. Provincial Governor H.E. Oum Reatrey, present at the event, reaffirmed the commitment to prioritize risk education for community safety.
