Phnom Penh:Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet emphasized Cambodia's humanitarian values and hospitality through its assistance to the cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey. The Prime Minister made these remarks during a ceremony at Pursat Provincial Stadium, where rice seeds and food packages were distributed to flood-affected families.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Prime Minister recalled Cambodia's recent support to the Villa Vie Odyssey, citing financial difficulties faced by the company due to rising fuel prices. He highlighted that the country's actions reflected the humanitarian spirit and warm welcome extended by the Cambodian people to those in need.
The Cambodian government allowed the vessel carrying over 200 foreign passengers to dock without expecting anything in return, separating economic considerations from the immediate need to assist those aboard. The Prime Minister also referenced a similar instance during the COVID-19 pandemic when former Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen permitted the cruise ship Westerdam to dock in Cambodia, showcasing the nation's ongoing commitment to humanitarian aid.
Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed that Cambodia, having experienced its own hardships, is ready to assist others in difficulty, choosing to act out of humanitarian concern. Beyond docking permissions, Cambodia imposed no deadline for the ship's departure, allowing passengers, many elderly, to rest in hotels. The Minister of Tourism personally welcomed the passengers as well.
The Prime Minister affirmed that Cambodia, though not wealthy, strives to help and find solutions for those in difficulty. The Villa Vie Odyssey departed Cambodia on the night of November 3, 2026. Passengers and crew expressed gratitude for the assistance and hospitality they received, commending the Cambodian people's humanitarian spirit during their stay.
