Cambodian PM Highlights Key Priorities at ASEAN Future Forum

Hanoi: Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet stressed the importance of peace, economic cooperation, and people-centered development during his address at the 3rd ASEAN Future Forum, held on June 9 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the head of the royal government stated that the ASEAN Future Forum had quickly become an essential platform for open and strategic exchanges on the key challenges facing the region and the world. He added that this year's theme, "Building Our Future Together: Peace, Prosperity and People-Centered Development," reflects ASEAN's current priorities.

Looking back on the regional organization's journey, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet recalled that Southeast Asia had transformed from a region marked by conflict and division to one of the most stable and dynamic regions, thanks to dialogue, respect for sovereignty, non-interference, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

He nevertheless warned that peace should not be taken for granted, citing the persistent tensions in the Middle East, which affect energy costs, food prices, supply chains, and global economic stability.

Regarding the border issue between Cambodia and Thailand, the Prime Minister stated that the ceasefire between the two countries remained in effect but was fragile. He reiterated Cambodia's position that borders and sovereignty should not be altered by force.

He stressed the importance of fully implementing the Joint Communiqu© of December 27, 2025, including the swift resumption of delimitation work carried out by the Joint Border Commission (JBC), in accordance with existing agreements. The Cambodian Prime Minister also reiterated the importance Cambodia attaches to its relations with Thailand and stressed respect for international law, existing agreements, dialogue, good faith, and mutual respect to restore trust and promote lasting peace.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also mentioned Cambodia's recent decision to initiate a mandatory conciliation procedure under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), believing it demonstrates the country's commitment to a just and lasting solution based on international law.

On the economic front, he indicated that the current global crises were creating significant challenges for sustainable development, particularly for small states heavily dependent on international trade and a rules-based international order.

Finally, addressing the human dimension, the Prime Minister stressed that all public policies must serve the well-being of citizens. He asserted that ASEAN's achievements should be measured not only through economic indicators but also by tangible improvements in the quality of life for its people.

He called on member states to strengthen exchanges between young people, academics, and the cultural, economic, and media sectors to promote mutual understanding and consolidate regional cohesion.
