Phnom penh: Cambodia has welcomed Myanmar's recent release of prisoners and described the move as a positive step toward dialogue, national reconciliation, and peace.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, in a statement issued on the evening of April 22, Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said it welcomed the release of prisoners under the Order issued by the President of Myanmar on April 17, 2026, granting amnesty to more than 4,000 individuals, including former President U Win Myint, as well as the commutation of the sentence of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, on the occasion of the Myanmar New Year (Thingyan).
The statement emphasized that this development aligns with ASEAN's expectations and contributes to a more conducive environment for dialogue and national reconciliation. Cambodia expressed its anticipation for further positive steps that build confidence and advance the cause of peace.
The Ministry further noted Cambodia's encouragement by the developments in Myanmar and expressed a strong hope that all parties can collaborate towards a nationwide ceasefire and national reconciliation.
Additionally, the statement reaffirmed Cambodia's commitment to working with all ASEAN Member States, guided by the ASEAN Charter and the Five-Point Consensus (5PC), to support Myanmar's return to normalcy through a political process that is inclusive, led, and owned by Myanmar.
