Cambodia Calls for Respect of UN Charter Amid Territorial Dispute with Thailand

Phnom penh: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Prak Sokhonn has reaffirmed Cambodia's commitment to the United Nations Charter, emphasizing the need for respect for Cambodia's sovereignty and territorial integrity in light of the ongoing illegal occupation by Thai forces.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Prak Sokhonn addressed the High-Level Open Debate of the United Nations Security Council on May 26, underscoring the importance of principles such as sovereign equality, territorial integrity, peaceful dispute resolution, and non-use of force outlined in the UN Charter. He stated these principles must continue to be the cornerstone of international relations.

H.E. Prak Sokhonn highlighted the strain on these principles due to armed conflicts, geopolitical tensions, and diminishing trust among nations. He drew on Cambodia's historical experiences to advocate for resolving disputes through dialogue, diplomacy, mutual respect, and adherence to international law.

Recalling the pivotal role of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) in the early 1990s, the Deputy Prime Minister appreciated the international community's support for ceasefire and peaceful settlement efforts regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border situation, in line with international law and UN Charter principles.

He emphasized that borders and sovereignty should not be changed by force or through unilateral actions. Despite the ongoing ceasefire, H.E. Prak Sokhonn expressed concerns about areas well within Cambodian territory under illegal occupation and called for the urgent implementation of agreements, particularly the Joint Statement of Dec. 27, 2025.

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed the importance of respecting international law, treaties, agreements, dialogue, good faith, and mutual respect to restore trust, secure lasting peace, and enable displaced populations to return safely and with dignity. He urged continued international support for peaceful efforts to maintain peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

Cambodia has adhered to the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) held on Dec. 27, 2025. However, the Thai side has allegedly violated Cambodia's sovereignty through actions such as laying barbed wire, placing container units, constructing infrastructure, and destroying houses in the occupied areas.
