Vietnam Reaffirms Support for Cambodia’s ASEAN Chairmanship

Visiting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, H.E. Bui Thanh Son has re-affirmed Vietnam’s full support for Cambodia’s ASEAN chairmanship for 2022 and the outcomes of the official visit by Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen to Myanmar early this month.
H.E. Bui Thanh Son reiterated the support while paying a courtesy call on Samdech Techo Hun Sen at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh this morning, according to H.E. Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister.
On ASEAN context, the Vietnamese top diplomat congratulated Cambodia on its chairmanship of ASEAN in 2022 and supported the theme and the priorities that Cambodia has set for ASEAN in 2022.
H.E. Bui Thanh Son also briefed the joint statement of Vietnam and Laos made during Lao Prime Minister’s recent visit to Vietnam, saying that both countries expressed the support for the outcomes of Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s visit to Myanmar. He added that Vietnam wants to see Cambodia successfully chairs the ASEAN this year.
At the same time, H.E. Bui Thanh Son also presented the Vietnamese government’s invitation to Samdech Techo Hun Sen to visit Vietnam as this year marks the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Year and the 55th anniversary of both nations’ diplomatic ties.
For his part, Samdech Techo Hun Sen thanked the Vietnamese leaders for the greetings and support for Cambodia’s ASEAN chairmanship and his Myanmar’s visit, and expressed his appreciation of the current cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
The Cambodian Premier shared ideas on the fruitful result of Cambodia-Vietnam cooperation on the border development, bilateral trade, tourism, regional connectivity, fight against COVID-19 pandemic, and so on.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen responded positively to the invitation to visit Vietnam, but he said he will also invited his Vietnamese counterpart to visit Cambodia even though both sides often exchange visits.
On the Myanmar issue, the Prime Minister reiterated that ASEAN has many priorities and it is not the hostage of the Myanmar’s crisis, but Cambodia will continue to help Myanmar.
Besides, Samdech Techo Hun Sen and H.E. Bui Thanh Son exchanged views on some other regional issues including the South China Sea.
