Spokesperson Rejects UN Special Rapporteur’s Cambodia Press Freedom Report

H.E. Meas Sophorn, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson at the Ministry of Information, has turned down a report by the UN Special Rapporteur on the press freedom in Cambodia.

He rejected the report in an interview with AKP on Oct. 25, stressing that it is baseless, incomplete, biased and does not reflect the real situation in Cambodia.

He called on the UN Rapporteur to deep-dive his study in a manner neutral, representative of all concerned stakeholders and reflecting the reality on the ground.

The report should not be politically motivated and should not capture claims by a few civil society organisations with hidden ill-willed agenda.

The fulfilment of press freedom as well as the freedom of expression in Cambodia is guided by the country's Constitution and the rule of law, he added.

Cambodia's media is flourishing both in quality and quantity and the Royal Government through concerned ministries and institution is further promoting the field and addressing fake news and disinformation.
