The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has issued a clarification to media inquiries on the freedom of expression exercised during the visit of the Cambodian Prime Minister to Malaysia. Released on Feb. 26 under the name of its spokesperson, H.E. Chum Sounry, it reaffirmed no objection to any rightful freedom of expression while calling attention to such practice within the legal framework and related principles, which is the foundation of democracy. It noted that there have been views floated around freedom of expression, unfortunately, without putting it in its inseparable legal context. The statement highlighted some pieces of advice to bridge the gap, starting with the non-interference in the internal affairs of one another, which is one of ASEAN's principles enshrined under the association's Charter. Secondly, the host country has an obligation to ensure the dignity, security, safety, and smoothness of the visiting counterpart through any measures within its authority. The statement also underlined that foreigners, including diplomats with immunity, can exercise their freedom of expression in accordance with the law of their country or the country in which they are exercising the freedom.
