Senate President: 30-Year Family Ties with Thaksin Shinawatra Severed Over Leaked Call

Phnom Penh: Cambodian Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has expressed his sadness that the relations between his family and that of former Thai Prime Minister H.E. Thaksin Shinawatra were severed due to a leaked phone call.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, over 30 years of bonds between the families were shattered by the leak of a phone conversation by a Cambodian official. The call was leaked by an official who was angered by perceived insults directed at Hun Sen and the Cambodian Prime Minister, labeling them as unprofessional.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen recounted that during an official visit by the Thai Prime Minister to Cambodia in April 2025, they had a family gathering in addition to official engagements. The Thai Prime Minister Ung Ing (Paetongtarn Shinawatra) and her husband dined at Hun Sen’s residence. Before leaving, the Thai Prime Minister requested to see the rooms where her father and aunt had once stayed. The residence had preserved two rooms named the ‘Thaksin Room’ and the ‘Yingluck Room,’ where her husband took photographs and videos.

Both leaders confirmed the authenticity of a recent leaked audio recording of their phone conversation. Samdech Techo Hun Sen noted that the call occurred on the evening of June 15, 2025, lasting 17 minutes and 6 seconds, with Phnom Penh Deputy Governor Khleang Huot acting as interpreter.
