Prosecutors on Monday disclosed the photo and identity of a murder suspect indicted on charges of killing his estranged girlfriend and injuring her mother.
The mug shot of Kim Re-ah, 26, was made public by the Suwon District Prosecutors Office on its website (www.spo.go.kr/suwon).
Kim is accused of stabbing his 21-year-old girlfriend to death and seriously injuring her 46-year-old mother at his home in Hwaseong, about 30 kilometers south of Seoul, on March 25.
Kim reportedly committed the crime after his girlfriend expressed the intent to end their relationship due to his frequent dating violence. The mother was visiting Kim’s home to persuade him to break up with her daughter.
It is the first time that the prosecution has released a suspect’s face photo and personal information after the so-called mug shot disclosure bill was passed by the National Assembly last October.
The new law, which went into effect in January, allows police and prosecutors to disclose mug shots of suspects in heinous crimes wit
hout their consent. Previously, law enforcement agencies were allowed to disclose the photos of suspects in violent and sexual offenses with their consent. The new law also added more crimes to the disclosure list, such as terrorism, organized gangs, drug crimes and sex offenses targeting children.
