PM Says Restoring Cambodia’s International Reputation Is a Key Challenge

Phnom penh: Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet said restoring Cambodia's international reputation is one of the major challenges facing the country, particularly in addressing perceptions related to online scams.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Prime Minister made these remarks during a gathering with representatives of small and medium enterprises and handicraft businesses, commemorating the 3rd National Day of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) at the Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre in Phnom Penh. Samdech Thipadei referred to the initiative as a 'war to restore reputation,' highlighting the importance of overcoming the negative perceptions unfairly linking Cambodia to online scams.

The Prime Minister outlined that beyond security and economic challenges, Cambodia is tackling a new issue of rebuilding its image. The Royal Government began its mandate amid challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic's lingering effects, the war in Ukraine, reciprocal tariffs, Middle Eastern conflicts, and broader global economic uncertainties. Restoring Cambodia's standing on the international stage is among these tasks.

Addressing the issue of online fraud, the Prime Minister noted that these crimes are transnational and occur globally, arguing that Cambodia has been disproportionately associated with them. He emphasized that online scams not only represent a new form of transnational crime but also foster an informal or grey economy that adversely impacts Cambodia's reputation and public trust. Cambodia is determined to combat these scams.

Samdech Thipadei identified this challenge as a significant hurdle for Cambodia in the 21st century and reaffirmed the government's commitment to dismantling online fraud networks despite the rapid profits they may offer to criminal organizations. Eliminating these activities is crucial for restoring Cambodia's image and bolstering international confidence.

On the border issue, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Cambodia's dedication to protecting its sovereignty and national interests while advocating for peaceful negotiations with relevant parties. He stated that Cambodia would continue to resolve disputes through bilateral mechanisms whenever feasible, and issues that remain unresolved bilaterally would be addressed through international mechanisms in line with international law, with the goal of preserving stability.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Cambodia would not cede its territory, similar to Thailand's stance, urging both sides to continue negotiations patiently and calmly. He advocated for avoiding force to maintain peace and stability, minimizing impacts on both nations' populations.
