Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has called on people not to get into panic after a case of B.1.1.529 or Omicron – a Variant of Concern of SARS-CoV-2, was detected in Cambodia on Dec. 14.
While presiding over the inauguration ceremony of Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh Hotel this morning, the Premier said the first case of Omicron was detected on a 15-day pregnant lady travelling from Ghana.
“Even we have found a case of Omicron, please do not panic, but be more careful and stick to the health preventive measures,” he said.
“Excessive fear leads us to misjudge the situation, so do not be too fearful, but preventive measures, especially the ‘3 Dos, 3 Don’ts must be tightened,” he added.
The Omicron variant was first detected in specimens collected on Nov. 11, 2021 in Botswana and on Nov. 14, 2021 in South Africa. On Nov. 26, 2021, WHO named the B.1.1.529 Omicron and classified it as a Variant of Concern (VOC).
