PM Hun Sen: Cambodia Wishes to See Southeast Asia as a Region of Peace

“Cambodia wishes to see Southeast Asia as a region of peace, stability, and free of nuclear weapons,” said Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen in his remarks at the 16th East Asia Summit held this evening via videconference.

On this basis, he underlined, Cambodia would like to appeal to all initiatives, including military alliance that will be established by East Asia Summit (EAS) countries, to respect ASEAN Centrality, complement the existing mechanisms, and build upon the principles of mutual respects and interests to maintain stability, security, peace, and prosperity in the region.

Besides, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said the fight against COVID-19 is a necessary agenda for East Asia Summit (EAS) cooperation. “Cambodia is of the view that all countries must make the efforts and work together in unity to fight against Covid-19 with no political ideology and avoid using the fight against Covid-19 as political agenda. In parallel, with the new development of vaccines and medications, Cambodia would like to appeal for equitable, affordable, and timely distribution of Covid-19 vaccines and medications for all countries,” he added.

To expedite the socio-economic recovery, the Cambodian Premier said, we must continue ensuring for smooth production, supply chain and cross-border trade, strengthening the capacity of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), enhancing the capacity of women and youth entrepreneurship, promoting connectivity, and facilitating cross-border travels. In this spirit, Cambodia congratulates the adoption of "EAS Leaders' Statement on Economic Growth through Tourism Recovery" and "EAS Leaders' Statement on Sustainable Recovery".

Regarding the preparation of the New Plan of Action 2023-2027, Cambodia is of the view that we shall focus on 4 priority areas in line with the global trends, including (1). Strengthening public health security; (2). Enhancing the capacity of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs); (3). Promoting and strengthening cooperation in trade and digital economy and (4). Sustainable energy, stressed Samdech Techo Prime Minister.
