Phnom Penh:Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has reiterated his guarantee of safety for opposition politician Um Sam An and his team, encouraging them to come to Cambodia for direct discussions with the State Secretariat of Border Affairs' technical team on the Cambodia-Thailand border issues between Boundary Markers 52 and 59.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Prime Minister shared in a social media post that he had listened to Mr. Um Sam An's extended response to the invitation. However, he noted that the response did not clearly indicate whether the opposition politician would accept the invitation. The proposed discussions are intended to demonstrate transparency, accountability, accuracy, and responsibility to the Cambodian public as the border issue remains unresolved.
The Premier reassured that Mr. Um Sam An and his team would be safe throughout their stay in Cambodia and until their departure. He suggested that they could request safety monitoring by a foreign embassy in Cambodia or a civil society organization if they have concerns about trusting the Prime Minister or the Royal Government.
Samdech Thipadei emphasized that holding the discussions in Cambodia would serve two purposes. It would allow Cambodian citizens, including journalists, political representatives, civil society organizations, students, intellectuals, and the public, as well as Mr. Um Sam An's supporters, to attend and witness the exchange. Additionally, he stressed that discussions should involve more than just document exchanges; participants might need to conduct on-site verifications to establish the facts on the ground.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet expressed hope that Mr. Um Sam An and his team would accept the invitation, noting that participating in the discussions would reflect trust and regard for Cambodian citizens and demonstrate the government's commitment to resolving the Cambodia-Thailand border issue with transparency and accountability.
