Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen flagged the challenges in Myanmar crisis and the coordination of the code of conduct (COC) in the South China Sea, as Cambodia will become the ASEAN Chair in 2022.
"Do not place too much hope, but do not underestimate the role of Cambodia. Let Cambodia do it first. Do not interfere Cambodia's endeavour to solve these important regional issues," he underlined.
Samdech Techo Prime Minister sent out the message in the presence of foreign diplomats, senior officials and local and international investors at an inauguration of the Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh Hotel on Dec. 15.
The Premier also urged all the key stakeholders not to "blame" Cambodia if much progress could not be made, as the role of ASEAN chair is only a mediator, and encouraged the priority on Myanmar reconciliation.
In the case of Cambodia itself, he said, it took four years to achieve the Paris Peace Agreement on Oct. 23, 1991, while complete peace in the country took longer, until Dec. 29, 1998.
On the issue of the South China Sea, Samdech Techo Prime Minister reiterated three main stands -- to fully abide by the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), encourage countries concerned to settle the problem peacefully, and aim at achieving a COC acceptable by all parties in the dispute.
