Phnom penh: The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and China's Weixin Pay have launched the first phase of the Cross-Border QR Code Payment Initiative, allowing Weixin Pay users to scan KHQR codes in Cambodia. The official ceremony took place on August 18, led by H.E. Dr. Chea Serey, NBC Governor, and Mr. Ben Yang, Weixin Pay's Managing Director for Southeast Asia, North America, and LATAM Region.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, around 185 distinguished representatives attended the event, including officials from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China to Cambodia, the Ministry of Tourism, and various associations and financial institutions. This initiative marks a significant advancement in payment cooperation between Cambodia and China, enabling seamless transactions for Chinese visitors using Weixin Pay across Cambodia for dining, shopping, transportation, and more.
H.E. Dr. Chea Serey highlighted the strategic benefits for international visitors and domestic enterprises. For visitors, it offers a secure, instant payment experience without the need for currency exchange or reliance on cash. For local businesses, it opens access to a wider international customer base without additional operational costs.
Mr. Ben Yang emphasized the achievement of integrating Weixin Pay with Cambodia's KHQR standard, enhancing cross-border retail payment interoperability. The initiative extends a secure and efficient payment network, allowing Chinese visitors to engage seamlessly with Cambodia's digital economy. This development not only serves tourists but also advances local-currency settlements, regulatory clarity, and merchant digitization.
