Ministry, IOM to Continue Migrant Worker Protection Cooperation

Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training and International Organisation for Migration (IOM) have pledged to continue strengthening their cooperation, especially in migrant worker protection.

The pledge was made in a meeting between H.E. Ith Samheng, Minister of Labour and Vocational Training, visiting Dr. Nenette Motus, Regional Director for IOM in Asia and the Pacific and Ms. Kristin Parco, Chief of Mission at IOM in Cambodia here in Phnom Penh on April 25.

Dr. Nenette Motus asked the minister to support the implementation of IOM's poverty reduction under the Safe Migration, Skills Development and Enhanced Job Placement in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Thailand (PROMISE) project phase II for 2021-2025 in Cambodia.

Dr. Nenette Motus underlined that PROMISE is a regional programme implemented by IOM and supported by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

IOM also pledged to provide technical and knowledge support related to the meetings on immigration when Cambodia hosts ASEAN meeting this year, as well as the support for Cambodia's migration policy.

From his end, H.E. Ith Samheng thanked IOM and spoke highly of the organisation's vital roles in addressing immigration issues sustainably, and as an indispensable partner in Asia and the Pacific region and Cambodia.

The minister supported the IOM's request to continue its PROMISES phase II in Cambodia, and asked IOM to increase collaboration with the ministry on technical assistance for COVID-19 pandemic prevention for Cambodian migrant workers.

He also urged the organisation for support of the implementation of the 3rd CLMVT ministerial conference results related to Siem Reap roadmap toward the issuance of Labour Minister's statement on social security mobility for CLMVT's migrant workers.
