Minister, Partner Discuss Tobacco Control

Minister of Health H.E. Chheang Ra received here on May 8 a delegation of Vital Strategies, led by Dr. Tara Singh BAM, Asia Pacific Director for Tobacco Control, to discuss more measures to address the harmful product. Dr. Tara Singh BAM thanked the minister as well as the Ministry of Health for their good cooperation with Vital Strategies during the past ten years and commended Cambodia for noticeable progress in reducing tobacco use to among the lowest in the region and the world. H.E. Chheang Ra highly valued the contribution of Vital Strategies to Cambodia's tobacco control and requested the team to continue building the capacity of Cambodian officials involved in the work at both national and sub-national levels. He also asked the team to support the development of health warning messaging on tobacco products for the public. Dr. Tara Singh BAM appreciated the requests, highlighting that they are well in line with Vital Strategies' priority actions to further support tobacco control in Cambodia. The Royal Government of Cambodia passed the Law on Tobacco Control in 2015, which has guided the country in building public awareness on the harmful fallouts of tobacco use, banning advertisement of the product, forbidding smoking in public places, and beyond.
