MELAKA, The Historic Melaka City Council (MBMB) has won the World Clean Up Day’s Best Agency Award for the Local Authorities category at the Madani Love the Earth Appreciation Night held in conjunction with the 2023 National Recycling Day celebrations in Putrajaya last night.
MBMB mayor Datuk Shadan Othman said the Solid Waste And Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) was the council’s latest achievement in its various efforts to clean and beautify its administration area to ensure that Melaka continues to reign as the cleanest state in the country.
“We focus especially on tourist areas with programmes like Operasi Bandaraya Ekosistem Aspirasi Semua (Bebas) that has been running since April, conducting it almost 30 times now, on a weekly basis, collecting and separating almost 20 tons of rubbish,” he told reporters at a clean-athon event in Pantai Puteri here today.
He added that over 70 of the council’s officers and personnel are involved each time the programme is run, and many private entities and non-governmental organisations have also provided their assistance, leading to positive change in terms of rubbish-related complaints and the cleanliness level in the city’s areas.
"We have noted a drop in complaints via the Integrated Complaints Management System after the programme was launched compared to previously,” he added.
