LICENSED PRISONER RELEASE PROGRAMME EASES OVERCROWDING AT MACHANG FACILITY

MACHANG, June 30 (Bernama) - Between 150 to 200 inmates are released monthly under the Licensed Release of Prisoners (PBSL) programme from the Machang Moral Rehabilitation Centre to reduce overcrowding. Its director, SAC Mohd Nasir Yusof said PBSL had proven effective in addressing inmate congestion. 'Currently, PPA Machang houses 2,779 inmates, exceeding its capacity of 1,650. The PBSL, along with parole releases and transfers to Inmate Reintegration Centres (PRP), gradually alleviates this congestion,' he said. Speaking at the 'Majlis Cahaya Aidiladha: Setulus Pengorbanan Seikhlas Pemberian' event at PPA Machang, attended by Bank Rakyat Kelantan/Terengganu Regional head, Ghazi Omar, Mohd Nasir highlighted the programme's strategic impact. Mohd Nasir said that most PBSL participants were placed in the plantation sector, particularly in rubber, through a strategic partnership with the Malaysian Rubber Board. Additionally, he said inmates with no place to go post-release were housed in halfway homes, wit h two currently operational in Kota Bharu and Bachok, and another planned for Machang, pending approval.
