Korean-style fried chicken, kimchi among popular food for foreigners: poll

Korean-style fried chicken and kimchi were cited as some of the favorite "hansik" food among foreigners, a poll showed Thursday, with more people becoming aware of local cuisine. The survey was based on respondents from 18 major cities across the globe, including New York, Beijing and Ho Chi Minh City, in 2023. It was conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to study foreigners' awareness of hansik, or Korean cuisine. According to the survey, 60 percent of the respondents said they were "well aware" of Korean food, up 2.4 percentage points from a year earlier. The figure also marked a significant rise from just 54.6 percent posted in 2019. Around 16.5 percent of the respondents replied Korean-style fried chicken was their favorite Korean food, followed by instant noodle products with 11.1 percent and kimchi, or traditional fermented vegetables, with 9.8 percent. The respondents said key words to describe hansik included "savory," "reasonably priced" and "primarily plant-based." Around 92.5 percent of the people surveyed also said they were satisfied with their experiences with Korean food, staying above 90 percent for five consecutive years, the poll also showed.
