Khmer New Year Holiday Makers Reach Over 13 Million

Nearly 13.2 million people travelled to tourism destinations across the country on the three-day holiday of Khmer Traditional New Year, according to a report of the Ministry of Tourism on Monday.

Among them, 55,700 are foreigners, read the report, pointing out that the first day, there were almost 2.1 million visitors, the second day more than 4.2 million, and the last day about 6.85 million.

Siem Reap province topped the list of destinations receiving some 2.12 million tourists, followed by Battambang province with 1.5 million tourists, Kampong Cham province with over 1.4 million, and Phnom Penh capital with nearly 1.1 million, it added.

The total number of visitors are more than expected and even higher than that before the COVID-19 crisis, underlined the ministry of Tourism.

The ministry attributed the unprecedented surge in domestic tourism movements during the Khmer New Year holiday to the trust in community immunity against the COVID-19 pandemic, to the organisation of various entertainment events, especially the Angkor Sankranta in Siem Reap province, and to the full peace that allows people to travel around the country.

This year’s Khmer Traditional New Year celebrations ended on April 16.
