Kampot’s Salt Fields Gain Tourists’ Traction

Cambodia's coastal Kampot province sees the potential of its salt field as another tourist attraction. Mr. Soy Sinol, Director of the Kampot Provincial Department of Tourism, shared the note after observing increasing tours to the salt fields that encourage the locals to set up food and beverage shops along with other tourism services in demand. He also unveiled the provincial leadership's vision to transform the fields into another agro-tourism area. The advantages include the salt field location, which is close to the provincial town, the beach, and a tourism port that will be operational in the near future. With the increasing number of visitors, especially foreign tourists, the Cambodia Natural Salt Production Exhibition Centre, locally known as the Salt Museum, will be reopened soon after its COVID-19 driven closure. According to the director, in January 2024 alone, there were some 8,000 foreign tourists visiting Kampot, and the number rose to about 12,000 in February with a continuous upturn in Mar ch. Based on the record from the Kampot Department of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, the province has 3,000 hectares of salt fields. As of early March, the province produced around 20,000 tonnes of salt and is expected to increase the output to 100,000 tonnes if the weather continues to be favourable for salt production.
