India to Provide US$1 Billion Loan to Cambodia under Mekong-Ganga Cooperation

Prime Minister of the Republic of India H.E. Narendra Modi said that India will provide US$1 billion in loan to Cambodia under the Mekong-Ganga Cooperation.

The Indian Premier announced the financial support during a bilateral meeting yesterday evening via videoconference with Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, according to H.E. Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen appreciated India for its active contribution to the Mekong region and assistance extended to Cambodia through Quick Impact Projects under Mekong-Ganga Cooperation Initiative in the field of agriculture, environment, health, rural development, education, women’s rights enhancement, and culture.

In the meeting, both leaders spoke highly of the good relations and cooperation between the two countries, and congratulated each other on both nations’ successful efforts in containing and preventing the COVID-19 spread.

They discussed the promotion of Cambodia-India trade exchange through the creation of bilateral free trade agreement and of tourism through the establishment of direct flights between the two countries.

The high-level meeting further touched on the ASEAN-India Friendship Year 2022, the importance of India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway which will be expanded to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

Myanmar issue, Russia-Ukraine war, and South China Sea issue were also raised on the occasion.

Cambodia, India mark this year the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.
