Increasing Number of Media Outlets Reflects Freedom of Expression and Press Freedom in Cambodia

The Ministry of Information has spoken highly of the increasing number of media outlets and media practitioners which reflects the freedom of expression and press freedom in Cambodia.

The remarks were made by H.E. Minister Khieu Kanharith in the opening ceremony of a meeting to review the ministry’s five-year achievements and set forth new objectives for 2023-2028, held here on April 5.

In the past five years, the ministry has issued 10,033 media passes to Cambodian and foreign journalists and renewed licences to more than 2,000 media outlets, he said.

Currently, he pointed out, Cambodia has 661 registered newspapers, bulletins and magazines, 878 news websites and online TVs, 221 FM radio stations, 19 TV stations and 165 relay TV stations, without counting Over-the-Top TVs, Pay TVs, and satellite TVs.

There are 17 foreign news agencies and permanent representative offices of foreign radio and television stations and 51 media associations in Cambodia, H.E. Khieu Kanharith added.

“In the last five years, the number of media institutions has increased significantly, reflecting the openness of freedom of expression and press freedom as well as media potential in Cambodia,” he said.

H.E. Khieu Kanharith reaffirmed the Royal Government’s attention to the journalists, media professionals and media institutions without any bias, stressing the free legal assistance to journalists in the event of professional disputes.
