Hanoi: Hundreds of families have safely returned to their homes in Banteay Meanchey province after nearly two weeks of displacement, provincial authorities confirmed, marking an end to the immediate crisis triggered by a violent security incident earlier this month.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the mass return, involving residents from Prey Chan and Chouk Chey villages in O’ Beichoan commune, O’ Chrov district, was completed on Nov. 25 afternoon. It was meticulously coordinated by the Banteay Meanchey provincial administration, which provided direct logistical support, including transport and on-the-ground assistance, once the security situation was assessed as stable.
The homecoming was described by returning residents as profoundly emotional, replacing days of fear and uncertainty with visible relief and joy. The residents were forced to flee their homes abruptly on the night of Nov. 12, 2025, amidst gunfire and violent incursions near their community. The incident, caused by Thai army violently shooting, tragically resulted in one civilian fatality and three injuries, prompting the urgent evacuation of hundreds of households to ensure civilian safety.
Local authorities swiftly established temporary accommodation for the affected population at Chan Sy Samaky Ratanaram Pagoda in O’ Beichoan commune. The shelter served as a critical centre, providing care, reassurance, and security for the families, including the elderly and children, throughout their displacement.
According to officials, the temporary safety centre was fully equipped, reflecting significant attention from the Royal Government of Cambodia and authorities at all levels. Security forces maintained a 24-hour presence, food and essential supplies were regularly distributed, and medical teams were on standby to provide constant health care.
Returning residents expressed deep gratitude for the sustained support. Mr. Khon Samnang, a returning resident, shared his relief: ‘The moment I stepped back into my village and saw my house still standing, I felt indescribable happiness. I missed my home deeply. I am sincerely grateful to the provincial authorities for not abandoning us.’
Ms. Chhin Chhat singled out Banteay Meanchey Governor Oum Reatrey for consistent engagement. She noted the governor’s frequent visits and assurances that families received adequate food, medicine, and essential supplies throughout the crisis. ‘I have full confidence in the leadership of the Royal Government and firmly hope that stability will fully return so we can live and work in peace,’ she added.
Provincial officials emphasised that the successful return demonstrates the capability and commitment of the Banteay Meanchey administration, alongside the Royal Government, to safeguard and support its citizens. The two villages are home to nearly 1,000 families in total. All displaced residents received comprehensive assistance, including financial aid and essential household items, ensuring their basic needs were met until the environment was deemed safe for repatriation. While the psychological impact of the Nov. 12 incident remains, the continued presence and engagement of authorities are viewed by residents as a vital source of reassurance and a foundation for full recovery.
