Laayoune:Morocco's southern provinces experienced notably high voter turnout in the recent legislative elections, with several areas reporting participation rates exceeding 70% by the end of the voting process. According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region reached a turnout of 77%, while Dakhla-Oued Eddahab and Guelmim-Oued Noun recorded 61% and 53.48%, respectively. This trend of strong voter engagement has been observed in previous elections within these regions. Moulay Boubkir Hamdani, president of the Strategic Reflection and Defense of Democracy Center in Laayoune, described the high participation rate as a significant aspect of the elections. He emphasized that this reflects the sustained interest of voters in the southern provinces in both exercising their voting rights and participating in public life. The turnout underscores the importance these populations place on the electoral process for choosing members of the House of Representatives. The pattern of high partici pation is not new. In the 2016 legislative elections, Laayoune reported a 57.21% turnout, which increased to 66.94% in 2021. Similar increases were seen in Guelmim-Oued Noun and Dakhla-Oued Eddahab. Although territorial boundaries have shifted slightly, these figures illustrate the consistent voter engagement in the region. Hamdani attributed this trend to several factors, including intense local competition, the close relationship between candidates and voters, effective political party mobilization, territorial issues, the renewal of candidacies, and citizens' perception of their vote's impact. The digital sphere, particularly social media, has also played a role in boosting electoral information dissemination and interest, especially among young voters. The high turnout also signifies the institutional importance of elections as a mechanism for the southern provinces to participate in public affairs management. Hamdani concluded that beyond the turnout rate, the ongoing high participation is a key indica tor of local political dynamics and voter engagement in public life in Morocco's southern provinces.
