Cambodian senior official has expressed a deep dismay over the recent adoption of the Cambodia Democracy Act of 2021 by U.S. House of the Representatives.
H.E. Chin Malin, the Spokesperson at the Ministry of Justice, unveiled the disappointment for the bill that aims to groundlessly sanction some Cambodian officials to AKP yesterday.
The adoption of the bill, motivated by a small number of Cambodian outlawed opposition members and few U.S. lawmakers is political in nature and does not reflect actual situation of human rights and democracy in Cambodia, he said.
No country is perfect in terms of human rights, and even the U.S. itself has cases of human rights abuses, he continued, adding that the human rights situation varies depending on the social context.
To become effective the Cambodia Democracy Act of 2021 has to pass through the U.S. Senate and get endorsed by the country’s president.
H.E. Chin Malin is optimistic that the two layers will prioritise their national interest through the affirmation of bilateral cooperation with Cambodia, and will not be easily influenced by the Cambodian outlawed opposition members with hidden ill-willed political agenda.
As a sovereign country, Cambodia will always adhere to open and peaceful cooperation with all countries in the world, and any external threats would not affect the country’s diplomatic stand.
Cambodia is playing a more critical role in the international arena, and to name a few, the country will be the host of the 13th Asia-Europe Summit (ASEM13) in late November this year and become the Chair of ASEAN in 2022.
