Cambodian, EU Officials Visit Mekong Dolphin Habitat in Kratie to Boost Conservation Efforts

Phnom penh: A high-level Cambodian-European Union (EU) delegation, led by Cambodian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries H.E. Dith Tina and EU Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Igor Driesmans, visited the Mekong River dolphin habitat at the Kampi Dolphin Pool in Kratie province on Aug. 17 afternoon.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, with support from Belgium, the EU, and other development partners, the General Department of Fisheries and WWF have jointly managed, protected, and conserved this rare resource, recognised as a "national treasure." These efforts aim to maintain a balance between conservation and improving the livelihoods of local fishing communities by supporting the creation of new income sources.

The assistance in boosting household economies is designed to reduce total dependence on fisheries, while also encouraging community participation in conservation and the prevention of fisheries offenses, thereby contributing to the sustainable reduction of pressure on natural resources.
