Cambodia Wins Challenges to EU’s Withdrawal of Cambodia’s Tariff Preferences on Imports of Long-grain Rice

The Kingdom of Cambodia won the Challenges (case in T-269/19) to the EU’s withdrawal of Cambodia’s tariff preferences on imports of long-grain rice (Indica Rice) into the EU, according to the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF)’s press release AKP received this afternoon.

On April 10, 2019, under the leadership of H.E. Sok Puthyvuth, the former President of CRF, and with support from the international lawyers team, the Kingdom of Cambodia/Cambodia Rice Federation filed the case against the decision of the EU commission to impose import duty on long grain rice (Indica Rice) from Cambodia to EU’s market, the press release pointed out.

On Nov. 9, 2022, the General Court (which is the first instance court of the Court of Justice of the European Union) found that the regulation, and thus the imposition of the duties, was illegal and violated key substantive and procedural rules and lack of evidence, it added.

The result reflects the right vison and wisdom of the leadership of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, on the policy of rice sector development, the same source underlined.

On Jan. 16, 2019, the EU imposed safeguard measures on imports of Indica rice from Cambodia and Myanmar after an investigation had confirmed a significant increase of the imports which had caused economic damage to European rice producers.
