Cambodia Welcomes FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour

Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen presided over here at the Peace Palace this morning the welcoming event of FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour to Cambodia.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed warm welcome to the arrival of FIFA World Cup Trophy to Cambodia.

This is the first arrival of FIFA World Cup Trophy to Cambodia after it was introduced in 1974.

The FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour started on May 12, 2022 in Dubai and will travel through 51 countries and territories. As planned, the trophy was flown through a special aircraft of Coca-Cola company, and arrived at Phnom Penh International Airport on June 15 morning.

The gold trophy, awarded to the winners of the FIFA World Cup association football tournament, weighs only 6.1 kilogrammes, but its insurance value is US$200 million.

Since the advent of the World Cup in 1930, two trophies have been used, including the Jules Rimet Trophy from 1930 to 1970, and the FIFA World Cup Trophy from 1974 to the present day. It is one of the most expensive trophies in sporting history, valuing at US$20 million.

The first trophy, originally named Victory, but later renamed in honour of FIFA president Jules Rimet, was made of gold plated sterling silver and lapis lazuli and depicted Nike, the Greek goddess of victory.

The current FIFA World Cup Trophy was made of 18 karat gold with bands of malachite on its base, it stands 36.8 centimetres high and weighs 6.1 kilogrammes (30,875 carats).
