Cambodia Seeks International Support for Displaced Citizens Amid Border Conflict

Geneva:Cambodia has called for increased international support to address the humanitarian needs of its citizens displaced by the ongoing Cambodia-Thailand border conflict, urging Thailand to facilitate their safe and dignified return home.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the call was made by H.E. KE Sovann, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Cambodia to the United Nations in Geneva, during the general debate of the 77th Session of the Executive Committee of the High Commissioner's Programme in Geneva. He emphasized Cambodia's commitment to international refugee protection and its cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The Cambodian representative expressed concern over the global rise in forced displacement due to conflicts, violence, and other factors. Highlighting Cambodia's situation, he noted that the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict displaced around 650,000 Cambodians at its peak in December 2025, with significant damage to infrastructure and homes.

Although a ceasefire is in place, over 20,000 Cambodians remain unable to return due to the presence of Thai armed forces and ongoing restrictions. Sovann described this as a violation of Cambodia's sovereignty and a hindrance to the safe return of displaced citizens. He urged Thailand to resume dialogue and halt further destruction of Cambodian properties.

Despite the relief efforts by Cambodia and international partners, displaced individuals face challenges such as limited access to essential services. Sovann called for the implementation of agreements like the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration and cooperation with UNHCR to support displaced Cambodians.

He stressed the need for UNHCR to receive adequate funding to manage growing humanitarian demands and reiterated Cambodia's support for UNHCR reforms, advocating for peaceful dispute resolution and respect for international law.
