Cambodia Exports US$278 Million Worth of Bicycles in Q1

Cambodia exported bicycles with a total value of US$278 million to foreign markets in the first quarter of 2023, a year-on-year increase of nearly 20 percent, the Ministry of Commerce’s report showed on Wednesday.

The Made-in-Cambodia bicycles have been exported to the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Japan, and China, among others.

Cambodia is the top player in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in terms of bicycle export.

Currently, five bicycle factories are operating in Cambodia, all located in special economic zones in Bavet city of southeastern Svay Rieng province.

The Kingdom became the largest bicycle supplier for the EU market since 2017, overtaking China’s Taiwan, which had held the number one spot for two decades.

Bicycle becomes one of the main non-garment products, whose export has been on significant surge, said H.E. Heng Sokkung, Secretary of State and Spokesperson at the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation.

The increase in bicycle export reflects the diversification in the industry sector, from labour-intensive to skilled labour manufacturing, he underlined.
